Double Storey Extension
Double storey extensions are built from two levels of the property. It is a great choice to maximise the space in your property and a better economic choice than upsizing to a larger property. This will largely depend on the layout of your home and commonly used in semi-detached and detached homes.
For this type of extension, you will always need to apply for planning permission before building.
All side and rear extensions of one more than one storey will require planning permission.
Furthermore, it must meet the following requirements:
- Extensions of more than one storey must not extend beyond the rear wall of the original house by more than three metres or be within seven metres of any boundary opposite the back wall of the house.
- Roof pitch must match the current house as far as practicable
- Any upper-floor window located in a ‘side elevation’ must be obscure-glazed; and non-opening (unless the openable part is more than 1.7 metres above the floor).
